A Visit to Garden State Urban Farms

We took a ride to Orange's Valley Arts District to Visit Lorraine Gibbons' hydroponic green house around the corner from Hat City Kitchen.

Lorraine showed us how hydroponics work and told us who gets the produce the green house grows: local restaurants and community members.  Munchers learned that the seedlings grow just in water, because all the nutrients they need are built into the seed.  After the second leafing (the first leaves are really only seed casings) the seedlings get transferred to the nutrient-rich water.  In the picture below you can see the recently transferred seedlings on the right and the thriving plants in the middle and left.

Workers carefully record each step in the process.  We look forward to Thursday's visit to Garden State Urban Farms Newark Farm across from Beth Israel Hospital.
