Does one line look longer? Yes it does. But if measured you will see they are the same length. Even knowing that doesn't change how they look for us. One line still looks longer. What is going on? Knowledge won't change what our senses tell us. 
Likewise. We can make the one letter Disappear at the right distance from our one open eye. Our brain fills I. The missing letter with the background color. So we don't even really see what we are seeing. If we can't trust our senses can we trust science?
