History of playgrounds

Campers learned about the changing styles in playgrounds.  Playgrounds started in Germany as sand gardens, which we now call sandboxes.

They are still found in many playgrounds and back yards.  Then model playgrounds came about with metal structures such as merry-go-rounds, teeter-totters, and low and high swings, the latter allowing children to nearly swing all the way around!

Next came World War Two and adventure playgrounds set up in abandoned lots or bombed sites.

Novelty and themed playgrounds came next in the 1950s and 60s.

Standardized playgrounds emerged with a growing market for playgrounds in public parks and as safer equipment for school playgrounds.

Now we are into a Varied Playgrounds that seek to give children different textures, spaces, and kinds of play opportunities.
