Monday we visited Pathmark in South Orange and Bravo, a Hispanic grocery story at Scotland and Central avenues in Orange. We wanted to see what the different stores had to offer. Below is the chart we used to count the insane number of kinds of spaghetti sauces, yoghurts, milks, drinks, and breads each store offered. Over 270 different kinds of yoghurts! (counting different flavors and sizes). Although Pathmark had a greater variety of most foods, Bravo still offered a wide variety of each item. Plus Bravo offered foods that Pathmark didn't, and some at cheaper prices: such as tomatillos! (The green, tomato-like vegetable that green salsa is made from.) We found various vegetables we had never heard of, and bought a real coconut that we will taste later in the week.
Sous-Chef Eli explains to our chefs-in-training about the differences between Bravo and Pathmark. Sofia (with an F) looks on.
At Pathmark each Muncher got to pick out his or her favorite food: guess what we discovered when we got back to Camp Melissa and examined the items: each Muncher except Isaiah had picked out a food with sugar in the top three ingredients. As Lisa said, "Your food is really only a carrier for the sugar." We "dined" on a donut, Pepsi, rice crispy cakes with sprinkles, chocolate bar, muffin, and sesame-flavored blue corn chips!
